Visas

Deciding on a holiday to a location in another country, have a call for a business meeting abroad, one of the first documents that are needed are a passport and a visa that give you landing and temporary or permanent residency rights as described in the papers.  Countries of destination may issue visas of different kinds depending upon the requirements of the applicant and the visitor.  Some of the visas that may be issued by a country are;

  • Tourist
  • Employment (sponsored by companies within the country)
  • Residence

Countries located in the Middle East for example, only issue visas for reasons of employment and business.  Visas may be issued to businessmen intending to invest in the country.  However, it is mandatory that a foreigner has a local partner who has a 51% stake in the business.  This in no way means that the local partner is liable to invest 51% of the capital or even bear the losses.  The local partners only sponsor the business for a certain monetary value every year.  Though limited earlier, these countries are now opening up as tourist destinations as well.

Some countries do not require visas to cross borders.  The EEC for example issues one document known as the Schengen Visa which, allows the holder to travel across the EEC without being stopped at the borders.  However this document does not allow the holder to enter the United Kingdom.  A separate visa issued by the country is required for the same.

Every country has their own set of rules and regulations that are applied to people of different nationalities.  While a European national may not require a visa to visit a particular nation the same may not hold true for other nationalities.  Countries may have restrictions that may have been placed due to religious factors, dictatorships or even reasons of health and terror.  Countries may issue travel warnings to its nationals against visiting a particular nation in spite of being issued a visa.  This could be for one of the reasons mentioned above.

Most countries do not allow a person to travel without proper travel documents and a visa. Popular tourist destinations also have a system where people are issued a visa upon arrival to the country.  These are few are far apart and it is always advised that a person intending to travel makes the necessary arrangements well before actual departure.
