Student Visa F-1

Student Visa F-1
Student Visa F-1

The thought of an education that will specialize a person’s capability and enhance their knowledge is always on every students mind.  Even better is the thought of getting the education from a college or university in the United States. There is an absolute necessity for the thought to changed into reality by taking the necessary decisions well in advance, as there may be legal and financial requirements to be met before embarking on the journey towards a better future.

Visitors to the United States on a visitor’s visa are allowed to take a short course of 18 hours or less on the same visa.  However any courses longer in duration will need a visa known as F1 student visa.  Students intending to visit the United States on an F1 visa are advised to apply early to allow enough time for all formalities to be completed in time.  The consular office on its part may need to get special clearances depending upon the course of study and the nationality of the student.  The consular office may issue the visa up to 120 days prior to the start of the course.  In cases where applications are received earlier than the stipulated time, the consular office may withhold the visa until the 120 day period.  The consular may use the extra time at hand to get any special clearances that may be required.

As part of the visa application process an interview at the consular office is required for persons over the age of 14 and under the age of 79.  The waiting time for an interview may vary and early application for a visa is strongly advised.  A digital fingerprint of the applicant will be taken at the time of the interview and any additional documents required will be requested.  However, actual issue of the visa is not guaranteed at any time until all requirements are met by the student.  There may also be a case of different questions being asked to applicants depending upon the nature of study and the time that they may be required to spend in the country.

All applicants of a F1 visa should be ready to provide documents from previous courses attended along with scores from standardized tests such as TOFEL, SAT, GRE, GMAT etc.  Documents showing the financial condition of the student or the parents who are supporting the student will also be required to be submitted at the time of the application.

No assurances are provided by the consular office regarding the issuance of the visa.  Therefore travel plans are best delayed until the visa is issued and tickets only purchased after the same.  Once issued a visa is valid until the expiration date.
